Do onboarding quiz apps show a progress indicator on question screens?
39 of 67 quiz apps (58%) show a progress indicator — a bar or 'step N of M' — on their question screens.[1] It is the majority choice for a reason: a visible finish line reduces mid-quiz abandonment. If your quiz is more than two or three questions, a progress indicator should be your default.

The finding
Among 67 quiz apps with detectable question screens, 39 (58%) show a progress indicator.[1] That leaves 42% without one — so it's a strong majority, not a universal standard.
Named examples using a progress indicator: couple-joy shows a 3/20 step counter; codeacademy-go pairs its experience-level cards with a progress indicator; betterme's habit questionnaire includes one alongside back navigation; guitartuna uses a horizontal progress bar on its setup screen.[2][3][4][5]
How to apply it
Use a progress indicator whenever the quiz is long enough that a user might wonder how much is left — practically, anything past two or three questions. A 'step N of M' counter sets an explicit expectation; a bar gives a softer sense of momentum.
Be honest about M. If you show '3 of 20,' the user commits to 20 — couple-joy's deep quiz can carry that because the payoff is clear.[2] If your quiz might grow, a bar avoids boxing you into a fixed count.
Caveats
The 58% is computed over 67 quiz apps where question screens are detectable via a specific regex variant, not all 119 quiz apps.[1] Progress indicators are only counted when the vision text describes them, so this is a lower bound — the true share showing one is likely higher.
