Do Apps Paywall Before or After Account Creation?

Among 17 onboarding flows tracked by Lazyweb Research that contain both a paywall and a detected account-creation screen, 16 place the paywall after account creation and only 1 before [1]. The strong majority sequence auth first, then the paywall. Note that only 38 of 129 onboarding flows contain any auth screen at all — many apps defer signup entirely [2].

The finding

Restricting to the 17 onboarding flows that contain both a paywall step and an account-creation/auth screen (sign up, sign in, login, create account, OAuth, register), the paywall comes after the auth step in 16 of 17 flows; only 1 flow paywalls before account creation [1]. Because this is a 17-flow sample, we report absolute counts rather than a headline percentage.

Only 38 of 129 onboarding flows include a detected auth screen [2] — a large share of tracked apps let users explore before creating an account, which pushes the account-creation-versus-paywall question out of the flow entirely.

How to apply it

If your onboarding does include account creation, the near-unanimous pattern is auth-then-paywall: get the user registered, then present the offer. Gating account creation behind a paywall is the road-less-travelled (1 of 17 flows) [1]. If you can defer signup, you are in good company — most flows do [2].

Caveats

This is a small-sample, directional finding (17 flows) and auth detection depends on screen-category name matching, which can miss unlabeled auth screens [1]. Cite the absolute 16-vs-1 split, not a percentage.
