# How Cal AI builds a personalized plan before asking users to sign up

We are Lazyweb Research. On September 9, 2026, we published this analysis of an August 2026 recorded Cal AI onboarding path. It examines how Cal AI shows a product preview, gathers profile and goal inputs, presents preferences and permissions, generates an editable plan preview, and then asks users to sign in to save progress.

The capture contains 45 recorded frames, including repeated states and system overlays; it does not represent 45 unique questions. The analysis concerns one recorded path, not every possible Cal AI user journey.

## The sequence

| Captured frames | What Cal AI presents | Design role |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | A food-scanning product preview | Makes the core interaction tangible |
| 2–20 | Profile, activity, experience, and goal questions interleaved with encouragement | Collects inputs and frames an intended outcome |
| 21–29 | Obstacles, diet, desired benefit, and reassurance | Connects the intake to motivation |
| 30–37 | Health connection, calorie preferences, social proof, notifications, and referral | Introduces integrations and optional decisions |
| 38–40 | Plan generation, a tracking prompt, and an editable plan preview | Shows a proposed personalized result |
| 41–45 | Sign-in, trial reassurance, plan selection, and an App Store sheet | Moves from saving progress to a subscription decision |

This grouping preserves the exact recorded frame ranges. Adjacent frames can show the same question before and after selection, while other frames contain a system overlay. ## The output gives the intake a purpose

Cal AI’s height and weight screens explain that these inputs inform daily goals. Later, the plan preview exposes calories and macronutrients and provides edit affordances. In the captured interface, the preview visibly connects the preceding questions with the proposed result. The captured screens do not establish how the calculations work or whether the resulting health plan is suitable. ## Account creation follows the visible result

In this recorded path, the save-progress sign-in screen follows the visible plan preview. Account creation therefore appears as a way to retain something the user has already seen, rather than as a prerequisite for first seeing the product’s value. The capture does not establish that every user follows this sequence or that this placement improves completion. ## Intake and friction

The path asks about discovery source early, introduces several permissions, and includes an optional referral-code screen before signup. These steps can support business or personalization goals, but they also require user attention. A simpler product may not need the same amount of intake. The analysis recommends evaluating each question against the result it changes and measuring abandonment separately from later use of the resulting plan. ## Transferable design hypothesis

When a concrete personalized result can be delivered safely and cheaply, let users see it before requesting persistence or payment. Keep editing available so the preview remains useful when an answer is wrong. Test the sequence in the product being designed rather than treating Cal AI’s onboarding length as a target.

## Methodology

We visually reviewed the full 45-frame August 2026 Cal AI capture and its stored screen connections. Repeated selection and permission states remain part of the record. Product claims, prices, and health outputs are historical screen content; we do not infer conversion, revenue, retention, or health effects.
