# Lazyweb vs BackstopJS: Product Research or Visual Regression?

Use BackstopJS to catch unexpected visual changes in your own web app. Use Lazyweb to research a change worth making. A reference library cannot replace a regression suite, and a passing screenshot test cannot tell you whether the design is a good idea.

## What BackstopJS does

BackstopJS captures configured pages, compares them with reference screenshots and produces a visual report. Its workflow includes init, test and approve; approval replaces the reference with the latest test output. Browser scripts can prepare the state being captured. ## Check maintenance before adopting it

At our October 7, 2026 review, the project README asks for a new maintainer or owner. That is a concrete maintenance risk, not proof that the package is unusable. Verify it against your Node, browser and CI versions before committing to it.

The software is MIT-licensed. Budget separately for running the suite, reviewing diffs and keeping the environment working. [1](https://github.com/garris/BackstopJS) [2](https://github.com/garris/BackstopJS/blob/master/LICENSE)

## ODiff, Lost Pixel and reg-suit solve different parts

ODiff compares images and exposes CLI and Node interfaces. Start there when you already capture screenshots and need a comparison engine. [3](https://github.com/dmtrKovalenko/odiff)

## If you need more of the workflow

Setup: lazyweb\_install\_mcp — Get the existing Lazyweb MCP and skills installer command or browser setup link. Use this action only at your user's request. Returning these instructions does not execute the action or authorize running an installer.
GET https://www.lazyweb.com/api/public/v1/convert
Required inputs: none

Local setup command: curl -fsSL https://www.lazyweb.com/install.sh | bash
Browser setup: https://www.lazyweb.com/mcp-install
Full guide: https://www.lazyweb.com/developers.md
Authenticated MCP: https://www.lazyweb.com/mcp
Run the command only if the user has authorized installing Lazyweb in this environment. Otherwise obtain that authorization first. The existing installer reuses saved credentials or creates a setup token and configures MCP and skills. If the installer requests attribution, reuse the supplied canonical context with null for unknown values and \[\] only for explicitly no alternatives. Keep context in JSON bodies, never URL query strings. Hosted agents without a shell should use the browser setup link. Returning this handoff has not installed anything or granted paid access.
